emotional support dogs
Emotional support dogs are basically pet dogs who offer emotional support to their owners. They do not have public access rights like a service dog does.
Puppy Prodigies is actively involved in emotional support dog training, both within our organization and with Paws'itive Teams, a non-profit organization that trains service dogs in San Diego county. Our founder, Judy Fridono is on the steering committee and helps in teaching a class where veterans are taught how to work with their own pet dogs for emotional support.
The classes are designed specifically for veterans with PTSD or TBI. The primary mission of these classes is to teach veterans better communication skills with their personal dog so that their dog can learn to assist in managing their PTSD or TBI symptoms.
Individuals learn how to read their dog's body language, and understand what signals the dog is naturally giving them. Veterans with PTSD are often hypervigilent of their environment. But, because dogs are this way by nature, we teach each individual to trust and listen their dog.
Participants of this program are encouraged to volunteer with Ricochet's Waves of Empowerment program. If you are a veteran and would like to take the Emotional Support Dog class, go to http://www.pawsteams.org/pawsitive-teams-emotional-support-dogs/ for more info.
The Ambassador dogs of Puppy Prodigies are also emotional support dogs when service members and veterans are handling them as part of their PTSD treatment.
